TARIC Codes Explained for Italian Importers
Every product imported into Italy must have a TARIC code. Here’s what importers need to know about classification, duty rates, and compliance.
Why Classification Matters
Wrong TARIC code = wrong duty rate, potential penalties, seized goods, and back-duty demands. Italy Freight’s licensed customs brokers provide professional classification across all product categories.
What is a TARIC Code?
A 10-digit EU commodity code that determines customs duty rates, VAT, and trade measures for every product imported into Italy. First 6 digits = HS code. Digits 7–8 = EU Combined Nomenclature. Digits 9–10 = TARIC-specific measures.
How to Find Your TARIC Code
Use the EU’s official TARIC database at ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds2/taric/. For complex manufactured goods, chemical products, or machinery — professional classification is strongly recommended.
Additional Measures by TARIC Code
Some TARIC codes trigger additional measures: anti-dumping duties (common for Chinese steel, ceramics, textiles), safeguard measures, import quotas, and mandatory import licences. Italy Freight checks all applicable measures as standard.
